Why Do I Snore?

Snoring is a sleep disorder and it happens when airflow is partially blocked as it moves through your mouth, nose, or throat during sleep. This blockage causes the surrounding tissues to vibrate, creating the sound of snoring. Here are some common reasons why you might snore:

1. Nasal and Airway Issues

  • Nasal congestion (allergies, colds, or a deviated septum)
  • Enlarged tonsils or adenoids (especially in children or adults with chronic issues)
  • Nasal polyps

2. Sleep Position and Anatomy

  • Sleeping on your back can cause your tongue and soft tissues to collapse backward.
  • A thick or long soft palate or uvula can narrow the airway.
  • Being overweight can lead to extra fatty tissue around the neck and throat.

3. Lifestyle Factors

  • Alcohol relaxes throat muscles, increasing the chance of airway collapse.
  • Smoking causes inflammation and fluid retention in the airways.
  • Sedatives or sleep aids can have similar effects to alcohol.

4. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

  • Loud snoring with choking, gasping, or pauses in breathing could be a sign of OSA, a serious condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep.

If snoring is loud, frequent, or causing fatigue during the day, it may be worth seeing a doctor or sleep specialist. Have you noticed any other symptoms, like waking up gasping or excessive daytime sleepiness?
